A week into the worst snowstorm in human memory, midwife Eira Hansen gets a call informing her that her little sister has gone missing. All signs point to kidnapping.
Any sane person would follow government recommendations to shelter in place and let the police handle it, but Eira knows something they don't: ancient mystical creatures walk the earth with us, those known as vaesen, and Eira has reason to believe they have taken her sister for nefarious reasons.
With a hulder at her side, Eira braves the blizzard.
